Hand Strength:
These performance issues below are often present in kids who have weak hands when completing typical tasks required of them.
Weak Core Muscles:
These are some signs that your child may be struggling with weak core muscles and how that will affect his/her functional every day performance
As pediatric therapists, we would argue that having strong core muscles is one of the most important underlying factors for healthy motor development in kids.
Sensory Integration Red Flags:
We all have our own unique preferences and aversions when it comes to the way we perceive the sensory information in our surroundings. But for some children, these preferences and aversions can become problematic, leading to difficulty participating in everyday activities and routines.
The following behaviors are sensory integration or sensory processing red flags and may indicate that a child requires additional support to overcome/adapt to them in order to be more successful.
Identifying Speech & Language Disorders:
Children develop at their own rate. Some children walk and talk early. Others take longer. Most children learn skills within an age range, such as between 12 and 18 months. A child who takes longer to learn a skill may have a problem.
It is important that you know what to expect. Being aware of some signs of speech, language, and hearing problems will allow you to be proactive in your child's development should there be a potential delay or issue.
If your child in exhibiting any of the above red flags and it is impacting his/her functional abilities and the ability to interact with others, then talk to your pediatrician about getting a referral for occupational therapy and/or speech therapy services so that we may evaluate your children’s specific sensory needs, provide therapeutic intervention to address them, and give you sensory strategies and suggestions to use at home so that your child can be more independent and successful in life!
