Pediatric speech-language pathologists work to help children communicate effectively by assisting with the improvement of their verbal and non-verbal language skills. They also help with things like feeding and swallowing abilities. Pediatric speech-language pathologists work with children of all ages, from newborns to teenagers, to help with all of these skills.
When therapists work with children on speech, they’re looking to improve children’s articulation, decrease stuttering (disfluency), or treat voice disorders.
When therapists work with children to improve their receptive language, they are helping children process and understand the information they’re receiving from others.
When therapists work with children on expressive language, they are helping children learn how to produce words and combine words into phrases and sentences to outwardly communicate their wants and needs and share information.
The goal of pediatric speech therapy is to bridge the gap between your child's speech and language abilities and his or her environment. At Color Along we are focused on helping your children thrive, not just survive. We do this by supporting their speech, receptive, and expressive abilities.
Our interventions are designed to tap into your children’s strengths and engage their bodies and minds to develop the skills they need to become more independent. Each child is different! Once an initial assessment is performed, the speech-language pathologist will determine the best course of action. Interventions vary depending on what communication or feeding and swallowing goals will be targeted.
Children see speech-language pathologists for a variety of reasons, including difficulty:
Services begin with a 45 minute initial evaluation to get to know both you and your child and what difficulties you may be concerned about. The speech therapist will then essentially “play” with your child while having him or her attempt certain sounds, say words, and take note of his/her general ability to communicate. Standardized testing will be completed as well as a questionnaire by the parent to determine long- and short-term goals for your child.
A doctor’s prescription will be required to schedule an initial evaluation.
If your child is deemed a candidate for services, Color Along Pediatric Therapy provides speech therapy services and support to begin implementing interventions to meet goals set for your child.
